The short Russia-Georgia war in 2008

Russia provided military support to the Georgian breakaway province of South Ossetia. And has worked to establish stronger ties with both breakaway regions since then. The year 2008 was the year the confrontation between the US and Russia over NATO enlargemnt reached a new level of intensity when NATO formally declared that Georgia and Ukraine would both eventually become members of NATO, even though neither was formally accepted as a candidate then.
