So, for at least a few hours, it feels good to be back to the "normal" of the COVID-19 pandemic, what could be the worst economic depression since the Great Depression, and the now-routine massive corruption of big money in American politics. At least the likelihood of a howling white-supremacist lynch mob storming the US Capitol building has receded for the moment. And that's real progress!
For reporters, researchers, and random geeks, one sign of "normalcy" is the White House website. Even during the Cheney-Bush Administration, you could go to the WH website and get transcripts and videos of speeches and press conferences by the President and Vice President and texts of important documents being issued. The Trump White House website was pretty useless for that sort of thing.
This morning, you can go to the website and see this:
Boring. "Normal." And I'm good with that.
And I plan for this to be my last nod to "unity" with Back-To-Brunch-Liberalism!
One thing the now-boring-but-useful website shows us is that Biden actually did carry through on some important Day 1 executive actions. And the texts are availalbe there for:
- Ending the pending withdrawal from the World Health Organization
- Mask mandate on federal property
- COVID-19 response
- Rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement
- Ending Trump's oddball scheme for his ridiculous border wall
- (DACA) Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals protections
- Ending the Muslim ban
- Reinstating Deferred Enforced Departure for Liberians, refugees from civil war
- Pausing Federal Student Loan Payments
- New Ethics Rules for the Executive Branch
- Modernizing Regulatory Review
- Executive Order on Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation
- Honest Census Counting
- Reversing some de-regulation actions by the Trump-Pence Administration
