It painfully obvious that Trump was reading a prepared text. There's nothing wrong with that. But it also means he may say something drastically different the next day. And it was typical xenophobic demagoguery, despite the coherent sentences in the script. The recitation of individual stories of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants is typical of this kind of presentation by anti-immigrant groups and politicians in Europe.
The stiff, scripted format is probably what we'll usually be hearing from the future Great Statesman and Savior of the Republic Mike Pence when he moves into the Oval Office. He may be able to simulate emphathy better than the Orange Clown.
I assume that the Democratic responses by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Check Schumer were also being read from a teleprompter. But Pelosi came across as practical and sensible. Even Chuck Schumer sounded good.
The White House website published a transcript of the speech, President Donald J. Trump’s Address to the Nation on the Crisis at the Border 01/08/2018. The Voice of America website has the Democratic response transcipts: Democratic Response to Trump Oval Office Address 01/08/2018.
