Historian David Waldstreicher makes the argument highlighted by The 1619 Project when he writes, “The final Declaration of Independence … didn’t mention slavery explicitly, but the liberation of slaves by the British provides its ultimate justification.“ In other words, the most important goal in the mind of the American Revolutionaries was to *preserve slavery*.
But Waldstreicher also seems to come down in favor of the idea that the historical effect of the Revolution had an antislavery result. A bit of a Mugwump (fence-straddling) position, it would seem.
